Manly History

Manly was named by Captain Arthur Phillip who described the indigenous people in the area: “their confidence and manly behaviour made me give the name of Manly Cove to this place”, but it was not until the 1850’s that there was a vision of it being a seaside resort.

It was in this area that Aussies were introduced to surfing in 1914 by Duke Kahanamoku of Hawaii.

Today one of the main points of interest is the Manly Wharf which was constructed in 1855 with regular ferry services commencing the next year. A hotel was built and “the Corso” was cleared and is today the centrepiece for tourists and locals alike with around 200 retail, food and coffee shops giving it a village atmosphere and in fact Manly is still often referred to as “The Village”.
