Cronulla History

The name Cronulla was derived from the local Aboriginal word Karranulla meaning “place of pink sea shells”, and named by Surveyor Robert Dixon in 1827-28. It was still known as Karranulla until July 1852 when the schooner Venus was shipwrecked on the beach and was reported in the paper as Cooranulla which eventually morphed into what it is known as today.

In 1885 The Illawarra railway live came to Sutherland Shire and Cronulla soon beach became a very popular for beach picnics.

The Kurnell Peninsula (just to the north of the Cronulla township) was the first place Captain Cook sighted on the eastern coastline of Australia. Botany Bay lies just to the north of Cronulla.

There are many exciting things to do in Cronulla. Your wedding guests staying here can, amongst many other things, take an invigorating swim at the beautiful beach, visit the rock pools or drive up the Kurnell peninsula along Captain Cook Drive and walk through the State and National parks.
