Kuranda History

The name Kuranda is the name of the local Aboriginal people who have inhabited the area for over 10,000 years.

White settlement began here in 1885 and by 1891 train had reached Kuranda opening it up for the world to visit and experience its unique beauty. The current railway station was built in 1915 and is a must see when visiting the area.

Timber was the primary industry in the early years as well as dairy – coffee was also grown. In the early 1900’s it became a popular tourist destination attracted by the rainforests and the culture of the local Aboriginal people. Tourism is the mainstay of the local economy today with several National Parks close by.

There are a couple of heritage listings to note in Kuranda including the Cairns-to-Kuranda Railway Line (initially a steam train) and the Kuranda railway station. The railway line was initially constructed as a means to get supplies to the growing mining town of Herberton. The railway has 15 tunnels and required amazing engineering feats (for the time) to overcome steep terrain and dense rainforests. Today the railway is arguably the area’s most popular tourist attraction.
