Perth History

The local indigenous people were the Noongar and called what is now Perth, Boorloo. The lakes along the coastal plain were of great relevance for both food and spiritual sustenance to the local people.

Although eventually settled by Britain, there were several early explorations of the area by other nationalities, starting in 1697 by the Dutch, the French in 1801 and even the Brits in1822. However none found it suitable for settlement. In 1827 Captain James Stirling and his team explored the river and found it very favourable. However, they did not look wide enough afield to see that much of the area was made of sandy soil.

Partly due to concern the French would establish the area, it was decided to establish the Swan River Colony and in 1829 it was decided that Perth would be the administrative centre for the area.

Thought to be the name of the town where the British Secretary of State for the Colonies was born, the settlement was called Perth. However, he was actually born in Perthshire not Perth.

Charles Fremantle was the captain of the first ship to the Swan River Estuary and later claimed the whole of Australia (outside of NSW) for the Britain. The entry to the colony was the port city Fremantle and was joined to Perth by a dirt track in 1833.

Unlike many other settlements, land was sold to private citizens but in 1849 after meagre growth Perth became a Penal colony.

The Gold Boom 1885 – 1901 saw a huge impact on Perth’s development with the prosperity that came with it.
