a mini-tornado just as I was about to start a ceremony at Balmain. Yes, a Mipro PA on a stand can blow over and the force ripped open the PA!
I was able to put it back together and it still worked! Thanks to the quality of Mipro.
Meanwhile, I got the bride back to the car and suggested we delay the start until the worst of the weather event had passed. It did, and we had a wonderful ceremony!
Thank goodness for hairspray, a screwdriver kit in the glovebox, and a crisis management background.
DID YOU KNOW? A mini-tornado usually refers to a dust devil. This is a small column of rotating air that forms due to temperature changes with rapidly heating air above sun-warmed earth or pavement. They can form on clear days and usually only travel a short distance before dissipating.
A Guest jumping up in the middle of a ceremony and shouting, You Can’t Say that Story!
Sydney Botanic Gardens, a large ceremony with a string quartet playing – lots of bells and whistles!
I was telling the story of how the couple met, as part of their ceremony … until the bride’s brother jumped up from his seat and shouted…. You Can’t Say that Story, I’m telling that story!
It was a case of his mouth expressing loudly what his brain was processing, without applying a filter.
When he realised what he had done, he was horrified!
I simply said, don’t worry, I am sure your version of the story will be much better, but just now, my short version is leading them to being married.
The string quartet were most impressed with my quick response, applying humour and not embarrassing him.
Footnote: the bride and the guest’s Dad had sadly died less than one month before the wedding. The brother as asked to step up and take on the traditional wedding duties of a Dad. Plus he had just flown in from the USA and probably, jetlagged, stressed and grieving for his Father.
A few things (separate weddings)
(i) the bride’s mum suffered a heart attack in the “bridal suite” at Curzon Hall just before the ceremony – she and the bride’s step-dad left in an ambulance – the groom’s father then walked the bride down the aisle and we proceeded as planned, albeit about 45 mins late.
(ii) a wedding at Shelly Beach Cronulla – we were waiting as the groom’s son had not arrived and he was to be a witness. The son’s GPS system had taken him to a different Shelly Beach about an hour away. We waited a while longer then the groom said “let’s start” The son arrived pretty much as I said “you may kiss the bride” and came forward to sign the paperwork – I had to politely explain that as had not witnessed the ceremony – we had appointed another witness.
(iii) a wedding at Ulladulla – a dog was to bring the rings down the aisle let by a young boy (about 6). Half way down the aisle the dog just sat on it’s bum and refused to budge. The toddler wasn’t giving in – he dragged the dog along the aisle on it’s bum to the end of the aisle. Then the groom could not undo the ribbons with the rings (tied to the dog’s collar) so the bride’s mum came to the rescue – she kneeled down right in front of me to undo the rings. In the photo later (taken from behind the bride’s mum) – all you could see was the bride’s mum kneeling right in front of me (she obscured the dog in the photo) with all the wedding party looking on laughing and smiling – it was a rather risque-looking photo.
There may have been others but these one’s spring to mind. -
