Yes—you’ll sign three documents during the ceremony, usually straight after you say your vows. This is part of making the marriage legally binding under Australian law.

You’ll sign:

  1. The Official Certificate of Marriage (goes to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the State or Territory where you are marrying)

  2. The Celebrant’s Copy (kept by your celebrant for legal records)

  3. The Commemorative Certificate (you take this one home—it’s the decorative one)

These are signed by:

  • You and your partner

  • Your two witnesses (must be 18 or over)

  • Your celebrant

When does this happen?

The signing usually takes place just after your vows and kiss—while guests are clapping, music is playing, or during a brief pause in the ceremony.

Your celebrant will ensure everything is completed correctly and that the paperwork is submitted to the applicable BDM Registry within 14 days of your wedding.
