Yes—two witnesses are legally required for your marriage to be valid in Australia.

Your witnesses must:

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Be able to understand the ceremony (including the language spoken)

  • Be present in person at the time of the ceremony and when signing the certificates

Who can be a witness?

Almost anyone! Your witnesses don’t need to be Australian citizens or residents—they can be:

  • Friends or family members

  • Your photographer or videographer (if over 18)

  • Guests you’ve just met (yes, even strangers—if needed for elopements or private ceremonies)

They don’t need ID and don’t need to know you personally, but they must be sober, attentive, and willing to sign the paperwork.

⚠️ Important:

Your celebrant cannot act as a witness—they are the authorised official performing the marriage.
