To receive your official marriage certificate (the one you’ll need for legal changes like your name or ID), you must apply directly through the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) in the state or territory where your wedding took place.

This certificate is not issued automatically—even though your celebrant will lodge your marriage documents after the ceremony.

How to apply:

  1. Wait for your celebrant to lodge the signed marriage paperwork (usually within 14 days of the ceremony).

  2. Visit the website of the BDM in your state or territory.

  3. Apply online—you’ll need to provide proof of identity and pay a fee (typically $50–$70 depending on the format and postage).

  4. Processing times vary, but most registries issue certificates within 2–4 weeks once everything is received.

Note: In some states, including NSW, your celebrant can do this on your behalf and include this cost in their quote to you
