The processing time for your official marriage certificate (the one from a BDM) depends on the state or territory where your wedding took place, but most couples receive it within 2 to 4 weeks after applying.  In NSW, it can be as quick as 1 week.

It’s important to know that:

  • Your celebrant will lodge your paperwork with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) within 14 days of the ceremony

  • You can apply for the official certificate—it is not sent automatically

  • You can apply online through your state’s BDM website, with proof of ID and payment

  • You will receive an official Marriage Certificate at the ceremony, but this cannot be used for  most legal purposes like change of name, banking, etc.

Typical turnaround times:

State/Territory Estimated Time
NSW 1 week if lodged online by celebrant
VIC 2–3 weeks
QLD 1–3 weeks (priority available)
WA 2–4 weeks
SA 1–3 weeks
TAS 2–4 weeks
ACT 3–4 weeks
NT 2–3 weeks

Delays may occur during peak seasons (e.g. spring and summer weddings) or if documents are incomplete.
