There’s no minimum or maximum guest limit under Australian marriage law—you can have a huge crowd, a handful of loved ones, or no guests at all (except your two witnesses).

The legal requirement is simply:

  • You, your partner

  • A registered marriage celebrant

  • Two witnesses aged 18 or over

That’s it. You don’t need to invite anyone else if you prefer a private or elopement-style ceremony.

For larger weddings:

There’s no legal cap, but:

  • Your venue may have limits based on capacity or safety

  • If in a public space, council permits may restrict numbers

  • In very rare situations (e.g. during health emergencies or lockdowns), state health rules could temporarily limit gatherings—your celebrant will keep you informed
