If you need to reschedule your wedding, it’s usually no problem—your celebrant can update the date and time as long as the new ceremony still falls within the 18-month validity of your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM).
If you’re cancelling altogether, your celebrant is required to:
-
Retain the NOIM on file for at least 6 years
-
Notify the Attorney-General’s Department if they suspect coercion or fraud
-
May withhold a non-refundable booking fee if that was part of your agreement
🔁 Rescheduling your wedding:
-
No new NOIM is needed if the new date is within 18 months
-
Your celebrant will adjust the ceremony date in their documentation
-
Make sure your celebrant, witnesses and location are still available!
❌ Cancelling your wedding:
-
You do not need to inform a government department—only your celebrant
-
If you later change your mind and wish to marry again, you’ll need to lodge a new NOIM
-
Some celebrants may offer a partial refund or transfer the booking fee to a new date, but this is at their discretion
