To get married in Australia, both parties must provide original documents that prove:

  1. Identity

  2. Date and place of birth

  3. The end of any previous marriages (if applicable)

Here’s what you’ll need:

Required Documents:

Proof of Identity and Birth

You must provide either:

  • An original birth certificate (plus photo ID such as a driver’s licence), or

  • A valid passport (Australian or foreign)

If your documents are not in English, they must be accompanied by an official English translation completed by a NAATI-accredited translator.

If You’ve Been Married Before

You’ll also need to provide:

  • A divorce order (e.g. a Decree Absolute) or

  • A death certificate of your former spouse

How these are used:

Your celebrant must sight these original documents before the wedding day, ideally when you submit your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM).
